FINA International Competition Swimming Pool, Kaposvár

We are proud to highlight and showcase our involvement in a prestigious development in Kaposvár, Hungary, comprising two key phases: the design and construction of a new Olympic-standard swimming pool, and the renovation and retrofit of the existing pool facilities in the hometown of celebrated Hungarian Olympic medallist, Ferenc Csík.
The site is located on a narrow strip of land in Jókai Park, flanked by the Kapos River and the city’s main railway line and station, just south of the city centre. The area holds historical significance, with thermal springs believed to have been in use since Roman times. This was recently substantiated by the discovery of a Roman bathhouse near the ancient site of Lovia in Kapospula, just outside Kaposvár.
This article focuses on the first phase: the newly constructed Olympic-size swimming pool. Designed by local architectural firm Arker Stúdió, the facility meets FINA standards and includes a 50-metre pool with 10 lanes (25 metres wide), permanent seating for 300 spectators, and additional capacity for larger audiences. It also features dedicated areas for media, changing rooms, club offices, and storage spaces.
The site’s geography posed engineering challenges, particularly due to a high water table. To address this, the pool structure was elevated one floor above ground level. Spectator stands—accommodating up to 900—are arranged on three sides of the pool. A café and viewing platform are located at one end of the pool, with an additional upper-level gallery providing further observation space.
The project was executed by Magyar Építő (Budapest) and FÉSZ (Fertődi Építő és Szolgáltató Kft., Sopron). Ventosus was responsible for the HVAC, mechanical engineering, and building services design, with mechanical installation works carried out by Kozma of Zalaegerszeg.
Our designs integrated premium components supplied by esteemed international partners, with a focus on energy efficiency and long-term sustainability. The facility’s primary energy source is geothermal heat, reducing operational costs and enhancing energy security. Heat pumps support peak demand and ensure uninterrupted service during scheduled maintenance.

Immediately upon completion, the facility began hosting international competitions under FINA regulations. When not in use for events, the pool serves local sports clubs, training sessions, swimming instruction, water polo, other water sports, and is open for public enjoyment.
