As you approach Szeged from the southwest, crossing the “Belvárosi híd,” known locally as the “old bridge,” your eyes are immediately drawn to the imposing facade of the Peter Toth Mansion. Dominating the left-hand side of the main road as you enter the city, this historic building has stood as a landmark since its construction in 1881.
A Legacy of Change and Challenge
Originally built by Péter Tóth, a spice merchant and grocer, the mansion’s ground floor was designed to accommodate local shops, while the upper floors featured expansive, luxurious apartments. However, following the upheavals of World War II, these apartments were subdivided to provide much-needed housing. Over the decades, ownership disputes and legal battles left the building in a state of neglect, gradually leading to severe disrepair.
Ownership of the building was finally clarified, with the Diocese of Szeged receiving full control. In 2021, with secured funding, an ambitious renovation project commenced, aiming to restore the Listed Building to its former grandeur. The restored building would become home to the István Vántus Music School, blending historical charm with state-of-the-art modernity.
The Vision Behind the Restoration
The restoration plan was bold: completely demolishing the 2,600-square-meter interior while preserving the historic facade, which was protected under a preservation order. To achieve this, a team of top-tier professionals and firms was assembled:

Despite the complexity of this deep retrofit, the final outcome is a testament to architectural and engineering excellence. The mansion retains its original elegance, with beautifully restored wooden balusters and intricate cast-iron railings on the staircases. Yet, hidden within its walls are state-of-the-art environmental controls that ensure optimal air handling, heating, and cooling efficiency.
The Péter Tóth Mansion now stands as a shining example of how historical buildings can be revitalised for contemporary use while preserving their architectural integrity. With its blend of rich heritage and modern innovation, this project not only safeguards the mansion’s legacy but also enhances Szeged’s cultural landscape for future generations.
